Respect is the bedrock of our philosophy

Exceptional transformations. Considerate, tidy practices. No stone left unturned

The details matter to us, from our high standards of work and project management, to how thorough our clean-up process is, we deliver you a space that’s ready to be lived in the moment we leave.

At Gneiss, we believe the experience of a renovation should reflect the quality of the finished result. That means showing up on time, keeping a clean and organized job site every single day, and communicating with you clearly and honestly throughout, not just when things are going well.

When challenges arise, and in renovation they sometimes do, we don't rush to the first available answer. We take the time to think it through, understand the problem fully, and come to you with a solution we're confident in. You'll never feel like you're being managed or kept in the dark.

What we're really building on every project is trust. Trust that the work will be done properly, that your home will be treated with care, and that the people in it can be relied upon. That's the standard we hold ourselves to, and it's the experience we're committed to delivering.

Gneiss
(naɪs)
“nice”

Gneiss is a metamorphic rock formed under immense heat and pressure over millions of years. The result is one of the strongest, most enduring materials on Earth — defined by its distinct layering, a beauty that is entirely its own, and the permanence of something built to last.

We chose the name Gneiss, because it embodies everything a good contractor should be; experienced, resilient, and adaptable We take ideas and raw materials and transform them into something beautiful. The play on words sums up everything we’re known for, we’re simply good people who are nice to work with.

Our Process

Overview

The underlying approach to how we treat you and your home remains rooted in the same care, attentiveness and expertise we express in every job.

  • The first step is simple — reach out and tell us about your project. We'll have a conversation to understand what you're after, answer any early questions, and figure out whether we're the right team for the job.

  • We come to you and walk the space in person before putting anything on paper. This is where we ask the right questions, assess what's involved, and start building a clear picture of your project.

  • After the consultation we put together a detailed, itemized quote — not a ballpark. We walk you through every line together so you have a full understanding of the scope before committing to anything.

  • Once you're ready to go, we get you on the schedule and walk you through exactly what to expect from start to finish. Before work begins, you'll have a clear picture of the timeline, who will be on site, and how the project will unfold.

  • Throughout the build you'll always know what's happening and why. We keep the site tidy at the end of every day, the updates regular, and handle anything unexpected with honesty and care.

  • When the work is complete we do a thorough walkthrough together and take care of any final touches before sign-off. Everything we build is backed by our two-year workmanship warranty.

Meet our owner, Leeve

Gneiss Contracting was founded to address one of the most persistent issues in the renovation industry, trust.

Leeve began by building North Van Handyman, focusing on smaller projects and everyday home upkeep. Through that work, a pattern quickly emerged; clients weren’t just looking for help with minor repairs, they were looking for someone they could trust with larger, more complex renovations.

Leeve built this company, and his last one, on the belief that good construction starts long before the first tool is picked up. It begins with listening, clear communication, and a genuine understanding of how people live in their spaces. From there, it’s not just about delivering quality workmanship, but about treating every home with the level of care and respect it deserves.

The goal is simple, raise the standard of what clients should expect from their contractor.

Overview

  • It depends on the time of year and scope, but most projects are booked around a month in advance. We recommend reaching out early, especially for renovations that may require permits, as approval timelines can often take a few months.

  • We focus heavily on clarity and trust—clear scope, clear pricing, and consistent communication. Most of our work comes from repeat clients and referrals.

  • Project timelines are established during the planning phase and communicated upfront. While certain factors can influence timing, we aim to keep projects moving efficiently and keep you informed as work progresses.
